Rector inaugurates Safety and Emergency Response Unit - Commissions fire-fighting vehicles - Charges unit to be ready for any emergency response - Inaugurates muster points.
In what many considered a master-stroke in emergency response services, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede has inaugurated the pioneer Safety and Emergency Unit of the institution.
While performing the task last Thursday, the Rector charged the unit to be ready at all times for emergency response calls. He further observed that emergency calls require prompt and effective response so as to forestall collateral damage on lives and properties around the polytechnic and its environs.
The Rector also commissioned two fire-fighting vehicles, namely: a water tanker and a pressure vehicle. There were other vital equipment inaugurated alongside these facilities to enhance the operations of the unit.
The Rector used the occasion to challenge the unit to go through medical training on how to give first aid to a dying patient. He also advised that as fire fighters, their dress code must reflect their profession, stating that safety helmets should be donned by the workers in times of emergency.
In line with the Rector’s avowed policy of staff capacity development, the Rector expressed the readiness of the management of the polytechnic to send select workers of the unit to specialized training to further improve their professional capacity. Thereafter, the poly boss inaugurated one of the muster points that would serve as a safety bay in times of emergency.
The director of the unit Engr M.U Anyaehie expressed optimism that the unit would live up to their mandate, pledging to undertake a campaign of safety awareness round the polytechnic.
