Federal Polytechnic Nekede set to fully digitize learning process, says Rector
Following a successful digitization workshop penultimate Friday on the production, benefits and commercial value of lecture notes in Compact Disc, flash drives and online platforms, Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Engr. Dr Michael Arimanwa FNSE, has categorically declared that the institution would fully key into the objectives of the workshop with immediate effect.
The programme which was at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Education was held at the 1000-capacity auditorium of the Polytechnic.
Furthermore, the Rector reminded Heads of Departments who mainly constituted the audience at the workshop that the Polytechnic under his watch would not be left behind as the world goes digital. He therefore harped on the urgency of digitizing the pedagogical processes in the Polytechnic to enhance efficiency.
On the capacity and preparedness of the Polytechnic to effectively key into the programme, the Rector posited thus: “We have the capacity to deploy technology needed for lecture note digitization, whether in the Compact Disk format, Flash Drive or Online platform.” Accordingly, the Rector directed the immediate implementation of the digitization process by asking the Registrar to inaugurate a committee of three persons for each department of the institution.
These committees would in turn moderate lecture notes to be submitted by the lecturers and produce them in one composite form. Importantly, members of the committee must have technical and linguistic competencies to properly produce the digital lecture notes.
Meanwhile, the digital Rector noted for his unusual proclivity for digitized processes, has tasked lecturers to be intellectually resourceful in order to gain visibility for themselves and the Polytechnic at large.
Consequently, the Rector charged lecturers to be prolific in research to publish in high impact factor journals which would enhance their visibility. The Poly boss seized the opportunity to read out the names of ten scholars from the Polytechnic whose papers have received considerable visibility and references in high impact factor journals.
Finally, the Rector urged every staff of the Polytechnic to be committed towards making the institution excel in deploying digital technology in teaching and learning, as according to him “We want to be counted as one of the institutions that successfully implemented the digitization programme.”
Earlier, the resource person, Dr. Gbenga Yusuf, had listed the vital benefits of the digitization project to include: Improvement in standard of education, ease of download on electronic devises, reduction of stress and ease of delivery of lecture notes, flexibility of printing and elimination of academic problems and deprivations occasioned by long industrial actions, among others.
It will be recalled that the full digitization of the learning process is a key component of the Smart Campus Project of the Rector of the institution, Engr. Dr M.C. Arimanwa, a reason he was fondly named “the digital/smart Rector.”
Principal Officers present at the workshop were the Deputy Rector (Academic) Dr C.C. Onyemenonu, Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr Uzoma Ibeaja, while the Registrar and Librarian were represented by Mr. Nze Matthias and Dr Charles Obichere, respectively.
